Hazardous goods packaging for the transport of airbags
Airbags can be stored and transported securely and safely with the hazardous goods containers developed by Söhner Kunststofftechnik. The certified packaging unit consists of a 4-foot basic pallet with an integrated steel frame, twin-wall plastic sleeve, a lid, and specially adapted inner trays, in which the airbags can be packaged the way they will later be installed in production.
In dimensions 1240 x 835 x 975 mm, the hazardous goods container is compatible with Euro-mesh boxes and optimized for truck transport. In connection with the material combination, the robust structure of the load carrier enables loads up to 800 kilogram. Up to three additional containers of this type can be stacked on one load unit (1 + 3 stack). The payload amounts to 110 kilogram can be increased if necessary, however.
The packaging unit including airbags was approved by the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM)) for hazardous material class 1.4 (explosive materials and objects with explosive substances). Through the 6c bonfire test, which must be passed, the container also has the corresponding certification of hazardous material class 9 (various hazardous materials and objects). Changing from hazardous material class 1.4 in the logistically simplified hazardous material class 9 provides considerable simplification during transport. This makes shipping and receiving in export markets, as well as worldwide sea and air freight, possible without time delays or failures in the supply chain.
Handling the hazardous goods container is easy. A loading flap on the longitudinal side of the ring guarantees simple and ergonomic removal or insertion of the inner trays filled with airbags. In addition, the load unit can be driven under on all four sides and is suited for all common lifting trucks and fork lifts. Individual marking possibilities in the form of labels or document pockets can be attached to several points. The UN approval number is embossed onto the container sleeve in a clearly visible manner.
Hazardous goods packaging also convinces under sustainability aspects. The container remains in use for several years as a robust reusable solution, thus contributing to the prevention of waste and reduction of CO2. After that, the containers can be completely recycled. Here, the plastic is reprocessed and fed to the production process. In addition to driver, passenger, and head airbags, the container is also suited for the transport of generators, belt tighteners, and similar hazardous material – renewed testing and certification presumed.
