ESD protection

Safe transport of
electronic components

Electronic products such as semiconductors, transistors or light-emitting diodes must be protected not only from mechanical and thermal stress, but especially from electrostatic discharge (ESD). Even a single rapid discharge at a low voltage can impair the functionality of electrostatically sensitive components or destroy them.

To prevent this from happening and to prevent damage to the components during transport, we offer you packaging solutions with ESD protection. Made from conductive or dissipative plastic, our ESD packaging prevents electrostatic charges from building up and causing dangerous discharges. Instead, they dissipate voltages slowly, in a controlled manner and without harming ESD-sensitive components.

How does electrostatic discharge occur?

Electrostatic charge

Static electricity is generated by mechanical processes, such as the friction of a component in plastic packaging.

Potential difference

The charged objects now have different electrical voltages (potentials). This creates a charge imbalance.

Electrostatic discharge

If the objects are separated from each other, the charges equalize by emitting a voltage pulse: the electrostatic discharge.

Conductive

Electrostatically conductive

Dissipative

Electrostatically dissipative

Shielding

Electrostatically shielding

Conductive packaging has low surface resistance. This ensures that electrical charges dissipate in the shortest possible time and unwanted electrostatic discharges are avoided. The surface resistance is 102 to < 104 ohms.

Dissipative packaging dissipates electrical voltages in a controlled manner over the surface over a longer period of time. Unlike with conductive packaging, there are no voltage spikes. The surface resistance is between 104 and <1011 ohms.

Shielding packaging forms a Faraday cage around the interior of the packaging and shields the contents against electrostatic discharges. Electrical voltages are absorbed and distributed within the packaging. Discharge occurs only extremely slowly.

Our range of packaging solutions with ESD protection extends from deep-drawn load carriers for individual components to foldable large load carriers for complete assemblies. We can also develop customized system solutions precisely tailored to your products and processes. Our ESD packaging is available in conductive and dissipative versions.

Packaging solutions
To protect against electrostatic discharges

Your advantages with ESD plastic packaging

For ESD-sensitive products, such as electronic, electrical or optoelectronic components, there is only one safe choice: packaging solutions with ESD protection. Thanks to their conductivity, the special packaging provides effective protection against electrostatic discharge by preventing static charges and discharging any voltage that occurs in a controlled manner.
In addition, our packaging solutions provide reliable protection against physical impacts (e.g. shocks, blows, vibrations) and climatic influences (e.g. moisture). This ensures the functionality and longevity of the sensitive parts and components. Damage, failures and complaints are reduced – and customer satisfaction increases.
